Born out of innovation
American Peat Technology has worked with reed sedge peat for more than 20 years, primarily serving the row crop and agricultural industries. Over time, customers came to rely on APT not just for material supply, but for problem-solving rooted in a deep understanding of natural systems.
That posture was put to the test when a customer approached APT with a difficult water treatment challenge. It was not a problem with a clear or conventional solution. Rather than walk away, the team leaned in—studying the water chemistry, the regulatory requirements, and the natural properties of peat itself.
What emerged from that effort was more than a one-off solution. It was the foundation for a new approach to heavy metal removal—one that could harness nature’s proven filtration mechanisms in a reliable, engineered form.
That work ultimately led to the development of APTsorb™, a proprietary peat-based water treatment media designed to perform consistently in demanding, regulated environments.
To support growing demand and better serve customers navigating complex compliance requirements, Headwater Technologies (HWT) was established in 2021 as a wholly owned subsidiary of American Peat Technology. Today, HWT partners with customers across industries to design and implement practical, cost-effective water treatment solutions—combining proprietary media with engineering expertise, operational support, and a broader portfolio of trusted treatment technologies.
At its core, HWT exists to do what it has done since the beginning: lean into hard problems, apply sound science, and deliver solutions customers can trust.
